New York’s mayoral showdown is turning into a celebrity magnet, with Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani, Republican Curtis Sliwa, and Independent Andrew Cuomo drawing Hollywood heat ahead of the primaries — and Amy Schumer just stirred the pot by hinting at her pick without naming names.

New York is about to vote again, and somehow the mayoral race now includes a Democratic Socialist upstart, a familiar Republican, and a former governor running as an Independent. That alone would be enough drama, but the celebrity endorsements are flying, and some of them are... unexpected.

Who is actually running?

On the ballot: Zohran Mamdani (Democratic Socialist), Curtis Sliwa (Republican), and Andrew Cuomo (Independent). As primary season kicked off, a handful of famous names started weighing in, some loudly, some with the kind of coyness that begs you to read between the lines.

Case in point: Amy Schumer posted an Instagram Story with the caption 'Rhymes with Duomo' — which, yeah, sure sounds like a nod to Cuomo.

  • Michael Bloomberg — endorsed Andrew Cuomo, arguing his government and management chops put him ahead of the pack
  • Woody Allen — endorsed Andrew Cuomo and took a shot at Mamdani's experience on Bari Weiss's 'Honesty' platform

'I am gonna vote. I am gonna vote for Cuomo. I think Cuomo will do a much better job. Cuomo will be much better for New York. He will be much more efficient and he will be much more, he will just do a better job. I think [Cuomo is] experienced and knows New York, and Mamdani is inexperienced.'

Where the race stands right now

After Eric Adams abruptly dropped his re-election bid, a chunk of his support shifted to Cuomo, bumping Cuomo in the polls from 23 percent to 33 percent (via Ourtown). Even so, Mamdani still leads at 46 percent. Curtis Sliwa sits at 15 percent. So, on paper, this is shaping up as a two-way fight between Mamdani and Cuomo, with Sliwa playing spoiler.

Mamdani also reportedly came out of the recent debate with some momentum, which tracks with the way his unapologetically progressive campaign has been building energy and positioning him as the favorite among his rivals heading into November.

Big picture

Between the celebrity pile-on and the polling swing after Adams bailed, this race has that chaotic New York flavor. The Mamdani endorsements were rolling out for months before the general election, while Team Cuomo has rallied lately, and even Schumer found a way to say it without saying it. The only safe bet: this is not going to quiet down anytime soon.
