And the winner is not so shocking.

While American Horror Story is still quite popular 12 years after its premiere, there's no denying that the iconic anthology show has lost some of its juice over the years. Many fans say that the series' recent seasons lack the charisma and interesting setting that once made its first five installments a cultural sensation.

Nevertheless, creator Ryan Murphy intends to restore the show's status with the upcoming Season 12, which will star Emma Roberts and Kim Kardashian.

But what is the creator's favorite episode of the show so far?

While there are a lot of strong competitors for that title, including fan-favorite episodes 'Return to Murder House' (S8E6) and 'The Name Game' (S2E10), Murphy decided to go conservative with his choice, picking the very first episode of the show as his favorite — the iconic pilot that first introduced viewers to Murder House and the idea behind AHS.

'[The pilot episode is] always number one in my heart, for several reasons. From rough idea to day one of filming took four years. It was a huge risk at the time, creatively and financially. Dana Walden [co-head of 20th Century Fox] has said to me several times it was one of the most out-of-the-box ideas in the history of modern television, and I think she's right,' Ryan Murphy said.

The AHS pilot became the most watched episode in FX history, making it clear that viewers were eager to see how Murphy would reinvent the horror genre. And though the show's first season had a few major flaws, including subpar directing and dated looks, Murphy's choice of the pilot episode as his personal favorite is largely supported by fans, as it was the first stone in the mosaic of all the great stories that followed.

In any case, Murphy might change his mind after the release of the upcoming mystery, which will follow an actress who is sure that some evil forces are trying to stop her from having a baby. Season 12 is already being marketed as a return to form, and old-school AHS fans can't wait to see what Murphy has in store for them this fall.
