If you can't wait to learn what happened to the inhabitants of the silo, here's your guide to Hugh Howey's book series.

The recent Apple TV+ hit, Silo is based on a series of short stories that were turned into three full-length novels, authored by Hugh Howey. Now that the show's premiere season has ended and the next chapter is not expected to hit the screens until 2024, many fans will likely turn to the source material to find out what happens to Juliette and the inhabitants of her silo.

Here's how to approach Howey's books if you haven't read them yet.

In 2011, Hugh Howey published one stand-alone short story, Wool, which focused on Sheriff Holston and his exit from the silo after his long-awaited separation from Allison, whose body was viewed daily by hundreds of silo residents through the display. Over the next six months, the author expanded the Silo universe with four more short stories, which later were published as the complete first novel, also titled Wool.

As expected, the books give you more details about Halston and Juliette's story and the dynamics between the silo residents, so you can just start reading from the beginning if you're ready to dive deep into the dystopian universe. However, if you just want to find out exactly how the story continues, feel free to open Chapter 30 in Wool and follow the events of Julia's exit into the scorched outside world from there.

Wool is followed by two other novels, Shift and Dust. Shift begins as a prequel, describing the backstory of the bunkers known as silos and flows seamlessly into the main timeline with Juliette. Howey has also published an anthology, Machine Learning, in 2017, which contains three short stories from the Silo universe, and a fourth untitled novel is currently in the works.

Though you're probably dying to know where the characters' journeys go after Season 1, we strongly recommend reading Howey's novel series from the beginning. In the books, there are many unique characters that do not appear in the show, and the author offers a much more comprehensive view of the silo and approaches the story's key themes in a different way compared to the adaptation.

If you're a lore-hungry fan, you won't be disappointed reading Wool and the rest of the series in its entirety. After all, there's lots of time to fill before Silo Season 2 premieres in June 2024.
