What OFMD's Local Cast Really Thinks About "Thirsty Fans"
Oh, they're well aware of our guilty pleasures.
In March 2022, we were introduced to a new source of gasps and material for sensual fanfiction when the first season of Our Flag Means Death, created by David Jenkins, premiered on HBO Max (now simply Max). What started out as a lighthearted pirate sitcom quickly escalated into a heart-wrenching LGBTQ+ romantic drama.
The show offers a candid representation of cultural identities and sexuality without resorting to obnoxious queerbaiting. It's a tragicomic love story between salt-hardened (and not so salt-hardened) pirates, set to the clang of sabers — perfect source material for fanfiction!
However, where there's a strong fanbase, there's also a high level of horniness, and it seems that the hard-core fans' feelings have only gotten more intense with the release of Season 2. The cast has not missed this, sharing their opinions on the matter.
New characters — New Headcanons
One of the new characters in Season 2 is Archie, a pirate aboard the Revenge, portrayed by New Zealand actor Madeleine Sami. Even before the season was released, fans were speculating about who Sami would play, and there was little doubt that the character would be non-heterosexual. Many were already imagining possible relationships.
The thirst only intensified with the season's release when it was revealed that Archie had chemistry with non-binary pirate Jim Jimenez (Vico Ortiz). Fanfiction stories about them or their love triangles (which included Con O'Neill's Izzy, Ruibo Qian's Zheng Yi Sao, and Samson Kayo's Oluwande) quickly emerged.
They Do Know About Your Fic, Folks
Don't think your creative talents should be hidden, friends. It turns out that stories about your favorite characters might very well be read by the actors who portray them. In December 2022, during the filming of Season 2, Madeleine Sami revealed that she's well aware of our indulgences!
'I'm learning about how intense the fans are,' Sami shared. 'I've seen some fanfiction, I keep getting warnings about what might happen.'
And They Know How Thirsty You Are
Archie's portrayer discovered how eager fans were for some pirate action even before HBO Max announced who she would be playing.
'There are people who have gone through my Instagram and gone "reasons why Madeleine Sami is the lesbian pirate in Season 2,"' she continued. 'They are a thirsty bunch of fans.'
Well, considering the romantic fling with Jim, one might assume that Archie is pansexual, but what the 'passionate bunch of fans' weren't wrong about was the LGBTQ+ energy of Blackbeard's newest crew member!
The next two episodes of OFMD Season 2 will be released on Max on October 12.
