Barbie's cast could have had even more stars.

Without a doubt, Greta Gerwig's Barbie is one of the most eagerly anticipated films of the summer. While the new Mission Impossible movie and Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer might match this Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling-led film in terms of fan anticipation, people already have a good idea of what to expect from the other two movies.

In contrast, Barbie still remains an enigma. It's hard to imagine how a movie based on a famous doll could be successful, but early reviews suggest that Gerwig has executed it perfectly, even though it appears she wasn't able to completely realise her creative vision.

Although Barbie's cast includes two of the biggest stars in the world, the supporting cast are equally impressive, with well-known actors such as Will Ferrell, Issa Rae, Dua Lipa, John Cena, and Michael Cera all making cameo appearances or taking on episodic roles. However, it seems Gerwig had one specific happy reunion in mind for one of the cameo scenes, hoping to bring together Lady Bird's Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet.

'But it was going to be a specialty cameo. I was also going to do a specialty cameo with Timmy. Both of them couldn't do it and I was so annoyed. But I love them so much. But it felt like doing something without my children. I mean, I'm not their mom, but I sort of feel like their mom,' Gerwig said.

Yes, it seems Ronan and Chalamet were intended to portray versions of Barbie and Ken in the movie, which sounds like a dream come true for all fans of their collective work over the years. Unfortunately, that concept had to be abandoned after both actors were unable to make time for the Barbie set, leaving Gerwig's dream unfulfilled.

Nonetheless, it appears Gerwig has achieved the improbable with her unique summer comedy, and there's a chance Ronan and Chalamet will collaborate with her in the future. Perhaps they will join her recently confirmed Netflix Narnia movies, set to begin production as soon as possible.

Barbie will open in U.S. theatres on 21 July 2023.
