Melodrama failed to stick the landing.

Since 2014, Hallmark's When Calls the Heart has been widely praised as one of the best melodramas on the air, and after ten seasons, fans were pretty sure that the beloved show could do no wrong. Unfortunately, those hopes were dashed in the final episodes of Season 10, as the writers managed to shock viewers in the worst possible way.

While everyone in the fandom had been eagerly waiting to see Lucas and Elizabeth get married for three seasons in a row, the couple actually broke up in the penultimate episode of season 10, sending shock waves through the community.

Worst way to end the season

Though some fans were hoping that Lucas and Elizabeth would patch things up in the show's final episode, that didn't happen at all, as it was clear that Elizabeth had no intention of moving to Capitol City with Lucas, preferring to stay in her comfort zone in Hope Valley and possibly start dating Nathan, a Mountie the writers had reportedly decided to make the show's main love interest.

And while such a finale would have been perfectly fine from a storytelling point of view, even if it would have been hated by the fans, the writers decided to make their case even worse by introducing a ridiculous cliffhanger.

After winning the governor's race, Lucas was seen being confronted by an unknown person before the screen faded to black. Afterwards, a meeting between Nathan and Elizabeth was interrupted by Bill, who revealed that Lucas was in danger and needed their help.

Yes, it looks like someone attacked Lucas after he became the new governor, and fans won't find out his fate until next year, which is a terrible idea by the writers.

Some fans won't come back for more

Fans were so horrified by such a cliffhanger, especially after the twist of Elizabeth and Lucas breaking up, that some of them boldly stated that When Calls the Heart was dead for them, and that they would not wait a year to find out Lucas' fate, just to find out he was okay.
