The season ended with a big twist.

For nearly a decade, Hallmark's When Calls the Heart was often called one of the network's best melodramas, as the story of Elizabeth, a young woman from high society who leaves her comfort zone to become a schoolteacher on the Canadian frontier, grew better with each season. However, the universal love for the show came to an abrupt halt at the end of Season 10, as fans hated the twist the writers were preparing for Elizabeth and Lucas.

For three seasons, the two had been planning to get married, and fans were eager to see the beloved couple exchange rings as soon as possible. However, in the final episodes of season 10, Elizabeth suddenly broke things off with Lucas, preferring to stay in Hope Valley instead of moving to Capitol City with her fiancé, who was elected governor in the season finale.

A total mess

Fans hated the way the writers decided to end the love story between the two, accusing them of completely ruining Elizabeth as a character. The fact that Elizabeth and Nathan had grown closer in the last few episodes also angered fans, as it looked like Elizabeth was ready to start an affair with a Mountie a little too quickly.

However, the scene in which Elizabeth and Nathan seemed ready to express their feelings to each other was cut short when the news arrived that Lucas was in danger, leaving fans with a huge cliffhanger. Thankfully, series producer Lindsay Sturman is ready to clear the air.

The future is uncertain

While most fans are already sure that Nathan and Elizabeth will become a thing in an upcoming Season 11, it looks like Sturman is not ready to confirm or deny it, focusing on Nathan and Elizabeth's mutual respect instead of spoiling the events to come.

'They are friends, and good friends have frank talks with each other. Additionally, Elizabeth is still processing everything that happened with her engagement, which was an echo of processing all the loss that followed her first wedding. Elizabeth and Nathan have each found their way back to that spot, which hearties know is significant from their past. They’re confused, and in a stew of emotion,' Sturman said.

It looks like fans will have to wait until next year to find out what Elizabeth's next move will be.
