'He's a huge part of Hope Valley and always will be.'

The tenth season finale of the emotional rollercoaster, filled with plot twists and somewhat frustrating cliffhangers known as When Calls the Heart, sees Lucas win the gubernatorial elections, become governor, and save Hope Valley. However, in doing so, he sacrifices what his heart truly desires — a blissful future with Elizabeth.

We wouldn't be too concerned about it if it only ended with another romantic pivot, but the final cliffhanger actually involved something terrible happening to Lucas in Capitol City. So now everybody wants to know what's in store for him next and whether we're going to see him at all in Season 11.

The showrunner has shared some intriguing details.

Showrunner On Why They Didn't End Up Together

Apart from the cliffhanger that left many viewers aghast and which we're going to talk about later, the final two episodes of Season 10 also disappointed Team Lucas by having Elizabeth call off their engagement. Showrunner Lindsay Sturman says she did it not because she no longer had feelings for Lucas but rather because she couldn't imagine her future without Hope Valley.

'Their paths start to diverge as he is forced to step up onto a bigger stage to save Hope Valley, and Elizabeth realizes that the life she wants is very different,' Sturman said. 'Her whole world has been, and perhaps always will be, Hope Valley.'

This season paid too little attention to Lucas. First, Elizabeth didn't seem to care very much about their future marriage, and then she went and forced him into a decision that she wasn't ready for herself, which was to leave Hope Valley. Unfortunately, the last we hear about Lucas in the season finale is when Bill tells Elizabeth and Nathan that something terrible has happened to him in Capital City.

What The Future Holds For Lucas

If Lucas were killed off, it would be extremely unfair to his character. Even though Elizabeth ends up with the Mountie in Janette Oke's book, in the series, it's been Lucas who's been making fans laugh and bringing them hope in the past several seasons. And then boom, the last episode breaks the terrible news that something awful has happened to him.

Naturally, some people assumed the worst and thought he might be dead. Fortunately, Lindsay Sturman has promised fans that Lucas will come back in Season 11.

'We can assure everyone that Lucas is back for Season 11. He's a huge part of Hope Valley and always will be. But there's definitely a cliffhanger and a few mysteries packed in there.’ Well, it looks like we're just going to have to wait and see what happens in Season 11, which Hallmark will be releasing sometime in 2024.
