Wayward may be billed as a limited series, but creator Mae Martin says the mystery is far from over, teasing ample room for more. With fan buzz surging, a Season 2 suddenly looks very much in play.

Netflix is calling Wayward a limited series, but it sure doesn't sound like the people who made it are done. Creator Mae Martin is already talking about where a second season could go, and the cast seems eager to jump back in. So yes, the "limited" label might be more of a marketing hat than a hard stop.

Mae Martin says there's more story they want to tell

In a chat with TV Insider, Martin made it clear they're not out of ideas if Netflix gives the go-ahead for another round. They were told the show was a miniseries, but the way Season 1 wraps up leaves plenty of threads to pull on.

"I was told it was a miniseries, but there's definitely more story to tell, I think. We left all those characters in crisis, basically. Hopefully, it's tied up enough that it's satisfying to watch as a series."

The cast is already talking like they'll be back

Toni Collette, who plays Evelyn Wade, the scheming head teacher at Tall Pines Academy, said the cast keeps talking about a return and that the show is "endlessly" rich with places to go. Sydney Topliffe (Abbie) said she'd love to come back, and Alyvia Alyn Lind (Leila) basically sent a voice note to the showrunner: "Mae, if you're listening, we're here. We're ready."

What Season 2 would actually dig into

Martin says a follow-up would lean harder into the fallout from the finale and give more runway to a few supporting players who made an impression in Season 1. Expect consequences, not a reset.

  • The aftermath of Evelyn's downfall and what that does to Tall Pines
  • Abbie's escape and where that road leads
  • The choices facing Alex and Leila, and how those ripple out
  • More focus on Stacey (Isolde Ardies), Mule (Tricia Black), and Duck (Joshua Close)
  • Evelyn isn't gone; Martin says she's still part of the picture despite what went down

So, is it renewed?

Not yet. Netflix hasn't made anything official. If you want to nudge the algorithm, all eight episodes of Season 1 are streaming now. And if this all sounds a bit inside baseball for a "limited series," well, you're not imagining it.
