School is officially back in session! Waterloo Road fans can mark their calendars, as the hit BBC drama confirms its Season 16 premiere date along with an exciting mix of new and returning cast members.

Waterloo Road is about to ring the bell again, and the BBC is going all in on the release. If you like a binge but still enjoy the old-school weekly broadcast rhythm, this one is very much both.

When and where to watch

The entire eight-episode Season 16 lands on BBC iPlayer at 6am on Tuesday 23 September. Then, for the traditionalists, BBC One will roll out double-bills every Tuesday night from 9pm. Inside baseball note: the BBC clearly wants the streaming numbers without giving up the linear audience, hence the day-and-date dump plus weekly twofers.

If you want a refresher first, previous seasons are already sitting on iPlayer.

So, who is new and who is back?

  • New staff: The biggest newbie is Jon Richardson as media studies teacher Darius Donovan. Christine Bottomley joins as Sam Drake, daughter of the new head, Dame Stella Drake (played by Lindsey Coulson). Fintan Buckard (Phoenix Rise) and Savannah Kunyo (Coronation Street) play Stella's grandchildren. Christopher Jeffers (Riot Women) arrives as Mitch Swift, the new SENCo lead (Special Educational Needs Coordinator). And yes, that familiar face you are thinking of is back: Jason Merrells returns as Jack Rimmer, now serving as the school counsellor.
  • Returning staff: Adam Thomas (Donte Charles), Hollie-Jay Bowes (Debs Rafferty), James Baxter (Joe Casey), Jo Coffey (Wendy Whitwell), Kym Marsh (Nicky Walters), Neil Fitzmaurice (Neil Guthrie), Rachel Leskovac (Coral Walker), Ryan Clayton (Mike Rutherford) and Shauna Shim (Valerie Chambers).
  • Returning students: Aabay Noor Ali (Mog Richardson), Chiamaka (ChiChi) Ulebor (Shola Aku), Danny Murphy (Luca Smith), Hattie Dynevor (Libby Guthrie), Liam Scholes (Noel McManus), Maisey Robinson (Portia Weever), Miya Ocego (Lois Taylor-Brown), Sonya Nisa (Aleena Qureshi), Summer Violet Bird (Tonya Walters), Thapelo Ray (Dwayne Jackson), Tillie Amartey (Stace Neville) and Zak Sutcliffe (Schuey Weever).

What Season 16 is actually about

The BBC is keeping it broad but pointed: Stella has to juggle being headteacher with some complicated family dynamics, which is absolutely going to affect how she runs the place and how she handles her staff and students. And because this is Waterloo Road, trouble is never far away, with another tragedy looming that will force some characters into choices that change everything.

"This September, Headteacher Stella is forced to navigate a fresh set of challenges, and this family dynamic will undoubtedly alter her approach on how she manages things, as well as relationships with students and fellow teachers.

With another tragedy on the horizon, the choices of some of Waterloo Road's own will have some life-changing consequences."

The 'field trip' episode (and a very familiar director)

One episode this season goes fully on location. It is directed by Angela Griffin, who longtime fans will know as Kim Campbell. That is some neat behind-the-scenes symmetry. The setup: the student body heads to a local estate for a community clean-up, and (shocker) it does not go to plan. Expect a few more familiar faces to pop back up during that one.

First look and the road ahead

The BBC has released new images from Season 16, giving a fresh look at the staffroom and the student chaos to come. And in case you are worried this is the end of the line: not even close. The show is already renewed for three more runs, taking it through Season 19.

Waterloo Road Season 16 drops in full on BBC iPlayer at 6am on Tuesday 23 September, with the first two episodes airing that evening on BBC One from 9pm.
