The Order of the Cruciform Sword and #SaveWarriorNun have finally prevailed in their legacy battle.

Recent years have seen an increasing number of popular series and entire franchises being cancelled by production companies. Fans fight for their favourite fictional universe, but they often lose, left with nothing to cling on to except their own passion as the sources of their inspiration fade into oblivion.

But, in a world of global turmoil and chaos in the film and television industry, there appear from time to time dim glimmers of hope. One such ray of sunshine in the dark is Warrior Nun: the show's fans and creator, Simon Barry, have just managed to secure a renewal for their beloved series after more than a year of tug-of-war over the show's future.

Despite the show attracting a strong cult following, especially because of the queer themes it explored, Netflix pulled the plug on it in December 2022 after just two seasons. The move infuriated fans, who teamed up with Simon Barry and launched the #SaveWarriorNun campaign, which included a petition with tens of thousands of signatures and even an online convention with writer David Hayter.

And now it would appear that all the efforts that went into saving the series have been vindicated: Simon Barry has announced that the show's been renewed for a third season thanks to the fans' efforts.

The show's creator promises an 'epic' continuation of the story. However, he also notes that there are no details at this point about whether the story will continue as a series, miniseries or movie or what the plot will be about. Neither is it clear at this point if Netflix will continue to produce it, even though it's possible if the streaming giant has heeded its viewers.

Based on the comic book franchise of the same name, Warrior Nun tells the story of Ava Silva (Alba Baptista), a young woman who gains supernatural powers and joins a secret Roman Catholic military organisation, the Order of the Cruciform Sword, to battle armies of demons.

The second season concluded with Ava having to bid farewell to her lover and fellow OCS member Beatrice (Kristina Tonteri-Young) due to her life-threatening injuries, which meant she had to retreat to the 'Ark' to recuperate. Beatrice, in turn, left the OCS. Presumably, the third season (or movie, or whatever form the sequel will take) will pick up where the second season left off, and we will see Ava again.
