Which Season 5 plot line was the worst?

Regrettably, for many fans, the much-anticipated Season 5 of Netflix's romantic hit, Virgin River, proved to be a massive disappointment.

Virgin River has always been seen as a light romantic show, but it skillfully balanced the fluff with action and drama. However, the creators seem to have gotten completely carried away with both fluff and drama in the latest batch of episodes.

New Writing Makes No Sense

While some viewers have lauded the new season of Virgin River, many have taken to social media to express their dissatisfaction. The primary criticism is that the show's writing has gone downhill in a major way to the point of becoming completely nonsensical.

Although Virgin River never aspired to critical acclaim, Season 5 set a new low.

‘The dialog between characters is poor - and most often delivered poor - and the storylines are just so unrealistic. I have shouted at the TV so many times this season. I’m really not sure I’m going to bother with season 6,’ a fan wrote on Reddit, kicking off a heated discussion.

Many fans in the comments echoed the Redditor's sentiment. Some even admitted to having stopped watching the show mid-season.

‘I stopped around episode 7 or 8 and don't plan on going back to it,’ a commenter wrote. ‘The charm has just been lost.’

Fan Ire

If you also sensed something was off this season but can't pinpoint it, fans highlighted a few scenes that particularly bothered them.

The most contrived and far-fetched scene in Season 5 was Mel and Jack babysitting in the woods. In reality, having random children disrupt their tranquility should have prompted the protagonists to think long and hard about how having kids of their own would change their lives forever. Instead, the show portrayed the two as infinitely kind and patient, demonstrating what excellent parents they would be.

However, that wasn't the worst part. After overdoing the cheesiness in the forest scene, Virgin River included an intensely distressing miscarriage moment that deterred many viewers. Coupled with the drug cartel arc, the court case, and the wildfire, it made for a rather depressing season.

To add insult to injury, the season unveiled its new major mystery: Mel's biological father storyline, which caused many viewers to experience a facepalm moment.

‘The dad storyline is so ridiculous, what the hell was that writer thinking??? It's so bad I don't care who the "father” is!’ a fan wrote to the agreement of others.
