Virgin River Season 5 Alarming Inconsistency Everyone Ignores
It would have been implausible in real life.
It's been a week since Season 5 of Virgin River premiered on Netflix. It's one of only a handful of scripted shows available this fall. Its latest installment continues to follow Mel Monroe as she navigates her new life in the small eponymous town.
Since Virgin River's debut in 2019, we've grown fond of the fictional town and its inhabitants. Perhaps for this reason, we've felt deep sympathy for them in the new fifth season, which features a devastating disaster sweeping across Virgin River. The wildfires that engulfed the Californian town have been central to the plot of Season 5, introducing several new characters, such as Kaia Bryant. Given this backdrop, it seems particularly unusual and somewhat irresponsible for the residents of Virgin River to have celebrated Labor Day in the manner they did.
Labor Day Fireworks After Devastating Fires
So far, only the first part of Virgin River's fifth season has been released, with the remaining two episodes – Christmas specials – scheduled for November 30. The finale of this part, episode 10, is set during the Labor Day celebrations in the titular town, intended to honor the residents' hard work in restoring the place after the wildfires. It's even more perplexing that they would have chosen to use fireworks to commemorate their efforts.
Consider this: there were raging wildfires that incinerated surrounding forests and devastated half the town not long ago, and now the town's residents have literally decided to play with fire as a way to remember their losses and sacrifice. That doesn't seem to make much sense, does it?
Virgin River Fans Disapprove
While most viewers don't seem to have any issue with the fireworks, some are taken aback by the writers' decision.
'Everyone's house just burned down but you have money for fireworks when there are still hot spots all over! This show has become a parody of itself!' a Redditor ranted about the Labor Day fireworks display in Virgin River.
Members of the audience appear unanimous in their belief that putting on a fireworks display after what just happened makes little sense.
'It's Virgin River. Nothing makes sense,' another Reddittor chimed in. 'I just learned to roll with it but I think, realistically, fireworks would have been a no go!'
Hopefully, the second part of Virgin River Season 5, which comes out on November 30, is more realistic than this.
