It makes so much sense…

We can all agree that the writers of Game of Thrones have let the fans down with the later seasons of the show. And I'm not including George R.R. Martin here, because the genius behind the show has had far too little influence on what has happened in those last few years.

Since the disappointing ending, almost everyone has had their say on how things should have gone and who should have won the Game of Thrones. Despite differing opinions, one thing everyone seems to agree on is that Bran shouldn't have been the victor.

But now a fan theory that has gone viral suggests that the ending should have included Bran - but in very different circumstances; Bran is revealed to be the Night King.

It may seem a bit of a stretch, but it makes perfect sense. Bran's quest to find the Three-Eyed Raven was one of the most boring elements of the series. But there was definitely a connection between his visions and the Night King.

And the theory goes that a far more impactful ending would have seen "Bran's unparalleled warging abilities lead him to the distant past, where he is unintentionally trapped in the body of the First Man, transformed into the Night King by the Children of the Forest".

It's brilliant! And it addresses two major plot holes in the series. Both Bran's warging and the power of the Night King were stories that promised a lot and delivered absolutely nothing. Combining the two to create a dramatic twist that massively changed the balance of power, and could even be seen as fulfilling the prophecy of The Prince Who Was Promised, would have delivered on all the build-up and anticipation that surrounded the last season - no matter how bad it was.

Which begs a very obvious question. Why couldn't the writers come up with that idea? Or at least something as creative and compelling?

Lack of interest? A failure to delve into the source material to find an ending worthy of a legendary series? Or is it just that Game of Thrones fans are smarter than Game of Thrones writers? Whatever the reason, one thing is for sure: this piece of fan theory has garnered a lot of attention, and is clearly a more popular ending among fans of the show than the actual dross we were presented with on that fateful Sunday night in 2019.
