Fans thank Iam for helping them overcome their personal tragedy.

American Idol has crowned the winner of its 21st season, and the choice was no surprise to those who followed the competition from the first audition.

Early in this season, 18-year-old Iam Tongi captured the hearts of the show's massive audience with his beautiful voice and tragic story, and many expected this talented contestant to come out on top.

Back in February, Iam dedicated his sensational performance of Jame Blunt's 'Monsters' to his late father, Rodney Tongi, who passed away from stage 4 kidney disease just months before the audition. Fighting back tears as he spoke to the judges, Iam revealed that his father was also a musician and a huge inspiration to him.

'All my life my dad told me that singing is the only thing that was meant for me,' Iam said in the introductory video. 'So the main reason I did music was for my dad. That's how me and my dad bonded, but ever since he passed away, it's been hard.'

The audition quickly went viral on social media, bringing tears to the eyes of American Idol fans and millions of casual viewers. Although he was on the verge of breaking down emotionally, Iam Tongi managed to pull off an amazing performance, and many were convinced he would go on to become the next American Idol.

And those fans were right. With each new episode, Iam's voice became more and more addictive for viewers, culminating in the finale when the young artist sang Keith Urban's 'Making Memories of Us.' Of course, Iam also dedicated the song to his father, moving the audience and the judges to tears once again.

During Iam's journey on the show, a clip of him and his late father performing a cover of Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton's 'Islands in the Stream' went viral. The video, posted on Iam Tongi's official Youtube account, shows how great Iam and Rodney were together.

In the comments, fans thank Iam for sharing his personal story and talent with the world, saying that his songs help those in similar situations deal with the trauma of losing their loved ones.

'I recently lost my dad [...]. I can't tell you how much listening to you has helped me. You are a true blessing to the world we live in. Please keep sharing your beautiful voice, we need it, it helps us more than you could ever know,' one fan wrote under the video.

We all lose people we love and it is important to have artists like Iam to make our suffering a little easier. The young performer has really struck a chord with the audiences in this season of American Idol, and fans are certain he'll go on to have an amazing singing career — and Iam's father would surely be proud of him.
