The iconic show is still worth watching.

The CW's The Vampire Diaries has quite a lot of haters, but it can't be denied that this series about young witches and vampires really changed the way networks and streaming services approached teen shows. Instead of shying away from mature themes and scenes, the show tackled them with utmost care so as not to alienate the general audience.

Even today, more than six years after it ended, The Vampire Diaries holds up surprisingly well and should be watched by any newcomer interested in the supernatural genre. Here's why.

First of all — the show's central romance. Vampires and witches aside, The Vampire Diaries is a romantic show, and thankfully, the writers and the cast were able to invent a compelling love triangle between Elena and the Salvatore brothers, Damon and Stefan. Following their complicated dynamics throughout the whole series is incredibly rewarding, both for old fans and new audiences.

In fact, it's hard to find a TV series with a more believable and exciting romance at its center. That's why The Vampire Diaries remains the go-to show for all fans of romance with a touch of the supernatural.

Secondly, the show holds up visually too, with all the CGI and VFX impressing the viewers even now. Of course, you shouldn't watch The Vampire Diaries for special effects only, but you can rest assured that dated CGI will never pull you out of immersion, as The CW was not cheeping out on production back then.

And finally, watching The Vampire Diaries is an escape into a much larger and exciting franchise, which consists of other hit series, The Originals and Legacies, that share the same lore and universe as the main story. The two spin-offs offer a perfect continuation for fans of the original, satisfying their hunger for new glimpses into the world of vampires and witches.

Besides, the franchise's creator Julie Plec teased last year that a new project based on the same universe is already in the works.

Of course, The Vampire Diaries is not a story for everyone, but as a romantic show with some action and mystery, you can't choose a better project to binge on!
