Some fans decided to throw shade at Caitriona.

While Starz's Outlander prides itself on big budgets, stunning photography, and great writing, the real reason the show remains relevant more than a decade after its premiere is the beautiful central romantic storyline between Jamie and Claire, brought to life with perfection by Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe.

The duo have been starring together since 2011, and fans have adored their chemistry, hoping the two actors will continue collaborating after Outlander ends.

Of course, not every Outlander fan shares the same opinions about the show's casting, with some fans of Diana Gabaldon's original book series arguing that neither Sam nor Caitriona look anything like their characters in the books. While most people took these complaints in stride, the recent criticism of Caitriona prompted others to come to the actress's defence.

As soon as the first half of the ongoing seventh season concluded and fans were once again asked to wait more than six months to see the characters again, some viewers decided to express their confusion and anger by criticising Caitriona's performance, arguing that her acting skills and 21st-century appearance made her the worst possible choice to portray Claire.

'They'd be a much greater cast than Cait, even though they are of different ages they would be able to pull off and capture the period atmosphere, and more fitting to the time range of the series, it would actually be more enjoyable to watch the series,' a fan said.

That, naturally, triggered some Outlander fans who immediately jumped in, arguing that Caitriona has proven over the last decade that she is a very talented actress, and given the chemistry between her and Sam, such accusations are not only unusual but also downright stupid.

'There's no divide between Claire and Caitríona. To me, she brings authenticity, complexity, and such a depth of character. I feel her warmth, her intellect, her stubbornness, her love. All of it. The character of Claire, however, can be annoying at times. She is in the books too…' another fan argued.
