Mewtwo storms into Pokémon Legends: Z-A as Project M drops a brutal new quest that culminates in a white-knuckle showdown. Beat it, and you’ll earn a rare chance to add the Legendary to your squad.

Mewtwo is finally up for grabs in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, but of course it comes with a few hoops. There is a new postgame quest called Project M that unlocks a special Mewtwo encounter. It sounds straightforward; it is not. You have to finish the story, claim some gifts, ride an elevator, and push a very ominous button. Here is the clean, no-nonsense path to catching the big purple menace and choosing the right Mega for it.

First: unlock Project M and grab the Mega Stones

You cannot start any of this until you have beaten the main storyline. After the credits, do the following to unlock the quest and get both Mega Evolution stones for Mewtwo:

  • Press X to open the Menu
  • Go to 'Link Play' → 'Mystery Gift'
  • Select 'Get via Internet'
  • Choose 'Project M'

That download gives you the Mega Evolution stones for Mewtwo X and Y and flips the switch on the Project M quest.

Where to find Mewtwo (and the button you need to push)

Head to Lysandre Cafe, go inside the lab, and ride the elevator down to Basement Floor B3F. A cutscene will kick off, and the game will hand you a very clear prompt:

'Release the locks.'

Yes, do it. Mewtwo will immediately show up and pick a fight.

How to prep and how the battle goes

Bring moves that hit Psychic types hard: Dark, Ghost, or Bug. Mewtwo is weak to those, and you will want the edge. Beat it, then catch it. Simple sequence, tough numbers.

After the capture, Mable will pop in to chatter about why Mewtwo is even down there. That is pure lore, so listen if you are curious, skip if you are not.

Important note on shiny hunting

Do not waste your time resetting: Shiny Mewtwo is locked for this encounter. You cannot get it shiny here, period.

Which Mega: Mewtwo X or Mewtwo Y?

Quick breakdown:

Mega Mewtwo X becomes Psychic/Fighting and leans into physical attack with sturdier defense. Mega Mewtwo Y stays pure Psychic, trades some bulk, and turns into a missile with higher Speed and Special Attack.

Right now, Mega Mewtwo Y is the better all-around pick for online play. With Xerneas and Yveltal flooding matches, going X usually puts you on the back foot unless you have a very specific plan. If you need raw pressure and speed control, Y is the move. If you are building around a physical sweeper and can protect it, X can still do work — it is just more matchup-dependent.
