The show surpasses the movie franchise in numerous ways.

Despite being one of the most popular Hollywood franchises of the 21st century, Twilight undeniably has its fair share of flaws. These include subpar writing and a problematic central romance: having a century-old vampire dating a 17-year-old caused discomfort among many fans. That really helped The CW's The Vampire Diaries capture a large portion of Twilight's potential audience.

Truth be told, The Vampire Diaries, led by Nina Dobrev, has its own issues. However, compared to Twilight, it seems to be the ideal vampire romance project, and here's why.

Better Writing

Twilight's writing has been a subject of ridicule for over a decade. Some of the lines delivered by Edward or Bella are so absurd that it is nearly impossible to hold back laughter after hearing them.

Although The Vampire Diaries also has its moments of poor writing, the overall quality of the plot and character development surpasses that of Twilight. The characters in the show mature realistically, and their dialogs about love don't make the audience cringe.

Much Improved Central Romance

While iconic, Bella and Edward's romance stagnated after the first movie and became monotonous and tedious to follow in the subsequent parts of the story. The love triangle between Bella, Edward, and Jacob made little sense, as it was clear from the onset that Bella and Edward were the endgame, with Jacob merely serving as a minor hindrance.

In contrast, the love triangle between Elena, Damon, and Stefan was perfectly constructed. Fans were kept in suspense about Elena's choice until the very end, making the show incredibly exciting to watch.

Even without the love triangle, Elena's romances were intricate and well-written, helping her character development. That is a great deal more than can be said for Bella, who remained a disenchanted teenager even in the saga's finale.

When you really think about it, The Vampire Diaries has proven to be a superior version of Twilight in almost every respect.
