Universal Has Ordered Another Jurassic World Movie, Here's What We Know
Another franchise is expanding to earn more money for the studio.
Summary
- The contemporary movie scene is dominated by big franchises.
- The multi-billion dollar Jurassic World film series is getting a new installment.
- The new film will follow a new story while being written and produced by the iconic Jurassic Park filmmakers.
We now live in a world where franchises rule the entertainment industry. If you think about it, almost all of the most successful movies are part of a series of films that span years, if not decades. Meanwhile, new projects are becoming a rare occurrence.
While last year wasn't particularly representative of this trend, with standalone films like Barbie and Oppenheimer dominating the scene, 2023 still offers ample evidence of that. For example, three of the year's most successful films, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Fast X, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, are part of large and immensely popular franchises. And now it seems that another cult movie series is about to get a new installment.
Jurassic World Part 4 Is Underway
Since Jurassic World premiered in 2015, it has been one of the most successful franchises, with three films that have collectively grossed a staggering $3.985 billion at the box office. As a sequel to the iconic Jurassic Park film series, JW has rekindled people's interest in dinosaurs, which hasn't seemed to diminish over the years. So it's no surprise that Universal has just greenlit a new installment in the franchise.
Details about the upcoming movie are scarce. But it's already been revealed that Jurassic World stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard won't be reprising their roles, as their characters' stories effectively ended in Dominion. Jurassic Park stars Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern and Sam Neill will also not be returning.
More Details About the Next Jurassic World Movie
At the same time, David Koepp, who wrote two original Jurassic Park films as well as the Indiana Jones and Mission: Impossible franchises, has been hired to pen the script for the Jurassic World movie. It was also announced that David Leitch will be directing the film. Although the filmmaker is new to the franchise, he has notable films like John Wick, Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2 and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw under his belt.
Steven Spielberg will once again produce the film through his Amblin Entertainment, which was responsible for all of the Jurassic Park films. Jurassic World producers Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley will also reprise their executive roles for the new installment.
The fourth film in the JW series, and the seventh in the larger JP franchise, will offer a fresh take on the beloved story. It's set to premiere on July 2, 2025.
