The Twilight saga refuses to stay in the coffin.

If you saw Twilight trending and thought we were getting a brand-new movie, take a breath. The vampires are back in theaters this October, but it is a victory lap, not a sequel. Still, there is a reason everyone started speculating.

What set off the rumor mill

Lionsgate tossed a little gasoline on the fire with a social post teasing an announcement. The graphic had Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner front and center with the tagline 'Forever Begins Again,' plus a simple caption: 'Tomorrow.' As you can imagine, the internet did what the internet does and immediately assumed new Twilight content was incoming.

What Lionsgate actually announced

No new Twilight movie is in the works. The announcement was about a theatrical re-release of the entire original saga this October. All five films are heading back to the big screen, giving fans a chance to revisit the mayhem, the melodrama, and the glacial stares in their natural habitat.

  • Twilight (2008)
  • New Moon (2009)
  • Eclipse (2010)
  • Breaking Dawn - Part 1 (2011)
  • Breaking Dawn - Part 2 (2012)

Quick refresher for the uninitiated (or the very invested)

Based on Stephenie Meyer’s novels, the films follow Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), whose romance with vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) pulls her into a world of vampires, werewolves, and one very persistent friend, Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner). The ensemble around them includes Billy Burke, Elizabeth Reaser, Nikki Reed, Kellan Lutz, Ashley Greene, Jackson Rathbone, and Anna Kendrick.

The first movie premiered on November 21, 2008, and made $408.4 million worldwide on a relatively small budget, instantly launching Stewart, Pattinson, and Lautner into international stardom. The fandom kept the momentum going through all five entries, with Breaking Dawn - Part 2 wrapping the saga in 2012. Collectively, the series has grossed over $3.3 billion globally.

Twilight never really left pop culture. It lives on through memes, perpetual rewatches, and even talk of an animated TV reboot. The October re-release is basically an invitation to experience the whole thing with a crowd again, which is where this franchise always played best.

A little perspective from the beginning

'A love that’s like a drug... that makes you feel ecstatic.'

So yes, that 'Forever Begins Again' tease was a clever nudge rather than a new chapter. But if you want to relive the Team Edward vs. Team Jacob discourse in a theater, October has you covered.
