HBO renewed the anthology in February 2024 and once aimed for a 2027 release. Jamaica Bay is a fact on Wikipedia and unconfirmed on TVLine.

True Detective has its fifth-season leads. Nicolas Cage will play Henry Logan and Antonio Banderas will play Rai García in the next season of HBO's crime anthology, TVLine reports. No other plot or character details have been released.

The season will start production next year. Wikipedia still lists it as scheduled for release in 2027.

A 2027 season that starts filming in 2027

HBO renewed True Detective in February 2024, right after the fourth-season finale, with Issa López returning as showrunner. According to Wikipedia, casting and pre-production were set to start in 2025, with the season scheduled to air in 2027.

The casting arrived in October 2026, and TVLine says production begins next year. A season that has not started shooting would have to be filmed, edited and scored within the same year to keep that 2027 date. The gap since the last season is already long: Night Country finished on February 18, 2024.

New York, or not yet

Cage was reported to be in talks for the season in August 2025. At the time, Henry Logan was described as a New York detective, and the season was said to be set in the Jamaica Bay area of New York.

The two sources disagree on how settled that is. TVLine says those details "have yet to be confirmed by HBO". Wikipedia states them as fact: "The season will take place in Jamaica Bay."

The most-watched season, by one measure

Wikipedia describes the fourth season, Night Country, as "the most watched of the series". Its own season table shows something else, at least for the linear audience:

  • Season 1 (2014): 8 episodes, average of 2.33 million viewers.
  • Season 2 (2015): 8 episodes, 2.61 million.
  • Season 3 (2019): 8 episodes, 1.25 million.
  • Season 4 (2024): 6 episodes, 0.654 million.

By average live viewers, Night Country is the least watched of the four. The table measures average viewers per episode; the "most watched" claim must rest on a different measure, which the article does not spell out. Night Country also earned the series' highest number of Emmy nominations, and Jodie Foster won the Emmy for lead actress in a limited series.

Four seasons, four sets of detectives

True Detective debuted on HBO on January 12, 2014, and has run 30 episodes, each season with a new story and cast:

Nic Pizzolatto created the series and oversaw the first three seasons. López wrote and directed the fourth, which she described as a "dark mirror" of the first: "Where True Detective is male and it's sweaty, Night Country is cold and it's dark and it's female." The fifth returns to two men.

How the anthology got here

True Detective began as a novelist's project. Pizzolatto, who had taught at the University of Chicago, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and DePauw University, turned to television after publishing his novel Galveston in 2010, and originally conceived True Detective as its narrative successor. The first season was shot in Louisiana over 100 consecutive days, on 35mm film, partly because the production qualified for the state's tax incentives. In January 2014, Pizzolatto signed a two-year extension with HBO.

The handover came later. In March 2022, a fourth season was reported to be in development, with López writing a pilot and Barry Jenkins as an executive producer. Night Country premiered on January 14, 2024, and Wikipedia now credits López as creator of seasons four and five, and Pizzolatto of seasons one to three.

Two film stars on HBO

  • Nicolas Cage: best known for films, from Moonstruck and Leaving Las Vegas, which won him the Oscar for best actor, to Con Air and National Treasure. His recent television lead, Prime Video's Spider-Noir, was cancelled after one season, according to TVLine.
  • Antonio Banderas: Desperado, The Mask of Zorro and the voice of Puss in Boots in the Shrek films. On television he has two Emmy nominations: for HBO's 2003 film And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself and for Genius: Picasso in 2018.

Banderas's first Emmy nomination came from HBO, 23 years before this casting.

What is still unknown

  • The story. HBO has released no plot details.
  • Whether Jamaica Bay is confirmed. TVLine says no; Wikipedia says yes.
  • The release date. 2027 depends on how fast a season that starts filming next year can be finished.
  • The episode count. The first three seasons had eight episodes, Night Country six.
  • Who else is cast alongside the two leads.

True Detective's fifth season was supposed to start casting in 2025 and reach viewers in 2027. Its two stars were announced in October 2026, and the cameras start rolling in 2027.
