Trap House hasn’t even opened, but sequel buzz is already in overdrive: Dave Bautista says Michael Dowse’s action thriller was built to launch a franchise.

File this under sequels-before-release: Dave Bautista says the team behind his new movie, Trap House, built it as a franchise starter from day one. The film is still headed for theaters, but he is already talking Part 2 like it is part of the blueprint.

So, is Trap House already angling for a sequel?

Pretty much. In a chat with MovieWeb's Joe Deckelmeier, the Guardians of the Galaxy alum (and yes, wrestler-turned-actor) said the cast and story were designed with follow-ups in mind. They were careful about who they hired, leaning on up-and-coming actors to carry future installments. It is a classic 'start small, plan big' move, but Bautista makes it sound like more than wishful thinking.

"I knew, moving forward, it would be all about the kids. This was always developed to be that. And the first film we would have to establish, you know, the kids and the relationships, but I was always one of the parents to be the backdrop, because I wanted this to be about the kids and move forward with the kids."

What the movie actually is

Trap House is an action thriller directed by Michael Dowse. Bautista plays an undercover DEA agent teaming with his partner, only to discover their own kids have been using the parents' tactics and intel to rip off a violent drug cartel. That cute, clever crime spree? It does not stay cute for long. The fallout turns into a cat-and-mouse chase with real danger at the door.

The cast they picked for the long game

  • Dave Bautista
  • Jack Champion
  • Sophia Lillis
  • Kate del Castillo
  • Whitney Peak
  • Bobby Cannavale
  • Tony Dalton

Where the sequel stands right now

No official green light yet. Nobody has announced Trap House 2. But Bautista is not shy about the plan: the first film establishes the kids and dynamics, and the idea is to hand them the wheel going forward. If the movie lands, do not be surprised when this turns into a series. Honestly, the strategy is right there on the surface.
