Chris Evans urges MCU fans to give the movies more credit because they are 'tough' to make.

Summary

  • Audiences are bored with the plethora of superhero movies.
  • The Captain America actor defends the MCU and superhero movies, but admits there have been mediocre films.
  • Chris Evans says there are movies in the MCU that make up for all the other flops and failures.

Despite the Hollywood strikes, 2023 saw many notable premieres. In particular, there were many superhero movie releases in both the DC and Marvel universes. And while some were successful, such as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the rest of the numerous premieres failed, with The Marvels being the biggest flop.

As a result, a new term was coined to explain the underperformance of some superhero movies. Superhero fatigue became a real thing as audiences seemed to lose their enthusiasm for the once beloved films. So much so that many people are calling for a break from superhero movies. But while they may have gone overboard in recent years, they don't deserve the hate they're getting. At least that's what Chris Evans, who portrayed Captain America in the MCU, thinks.

Captain America in the MCU

Chris Evans' iconic character is an integral part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and one of the core members of the Avengers. Captain America made his first appearance in 2011 in his standalone movie, subtitled The First Avenger. It wasn't a flop per se, grossing a nice $371 million against a $217 million budget, but it wasn't the most successful installment in the MCU. Still, the actor believes it deserves the same recognition as the rest of the superhero films.

'Comic book movies in general for whatever reason don't always get the credit that I think they deserve. I think they're these big giant movies, there's a lot of cooks in the kitchen. But I think the empirical evidence is that they're not easy to make. If it was easier, there'd be a lot more good ones,' Chris Evans shared his thoughts during a recent Comic Con panel.

Unfortunately, the actor didn't elaborate on which superhero movies he didn't think were 'good.' But he did admit that he's been in 'a few that missed.' However, it's not clear which movies Evans was referring to, as all of his previous forays into Marvel as Captain America and Human Torch before that have been either moderately or enormously successful, grossing millions and billions of dollars.

Chris Evans' Marvel Favorites

At the same time, the actor wasn't tight-lipped about his favorite Marvel movies, though he didn't name any specific titles.

'I think the Russo brothers have really done some great work. I don't want to highlight specific films in the Marvel catalog, but some of them are phenomenal. Just really objectively, independently great movies. And I think they deserve a little more credit,' Evans referenced the directors of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Endgame, and two more flicks in the series.

Chris Evans hasn't reprised the role of Captain America since Avengers: Endgame (2019), which saw Steve Rogers retire and pass his superhero baton, or rather shield, to Sam Wilson.
