TMNT: Mutant Mayhem 2 Scores a Major Win Even as the TV Series Is Canceled
Paramount may have axed the Mutant Mayhem spin-off, but the turtles aren’t retreating: a new THR report says TMNT: Mutant Mayhem 2 is still charging ahead, signaling a bright big-screen future.
If you saw the headlines about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles spinoff getting axed and figured the whole Mutant Mayhem revival was done, pump the brakes. The feature side is very much alive, and there is actually more cooking than you might expect.
Per a new industry check-in on Paramount from THR, the studio scrapped the animated spinoff series 'Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' after making two seasons, which set off the usual doom-and-gloom chatter online. But the big picture? Paramount is still pushing ahead with the movies.
'The franchise is not in jeopardy.'
Here is where things stand now:
- The TV spinoff 'Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' is done after Season 2. That cancellation sparked worry about the brand, but studio execs are reportedly still bullish on Mutant Mayhem overall.
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2 is still in development and moving forward at Paramount.
- A third Mutant Mayhem movie is already being discussed with Seth Rogen, who co-wrote the first film and voiced Bebop.
- The next feature-length sequel is dated for 2027, and expect Shredder to enter the chat this time.
- Before that, a short film, 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Chrome Alone 2 - Lost in New Jersey,' drops December 19, 2025, playing with 'The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants.'
If you missed it the first time around, 2023's Mutant Mayhem rebooted the Turtles on the big screen with director Jeff Rowe and a sketchbook-y animation style that actually felt, you know, sketched. It centered the brothers as actual teenagers trying to be accepted by the world they keep saving. The movie pulled in north of $180 million worldwide and got strong praise for the look and the character work.
The voice cast was stacked: Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu, Brady Noon, Ayo Edebiri, Maya Rudolph, John Cena, Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, Natasia Demetriou, Giancarlo Esposito, Jackie Chan, Ice Cube, and Paul Rudd. No, they did not skimp.
So yes, the series got the chop after two seasons were made, which always reads dramatic. But the main takeaway from THR's report is simpler: Paramount still likes this version of the Turtles, the sequel is in motion, and a possible threequel is on the table. If you were worried Mutant Mayhem was a one-and-done, that does not seem to be the plan.
