Timothée Chalamet's Mysterious Barbie Cameo: What Was It Supposed to Be?
The actor is as unaware as the rest of us.
Summary
- Barbie's popularity may be partially attributed to its stellar cast.
- Timothée Chalamet was almost cast for a cameo role in the film.
- The actor doesn't really know what his appearance would've been.
- Chalamet met with Greta Gerwig on the Barbie set.
It's been almost five months since Greta Gerwig's Barbie premiered, but the world is still talking about the comedy. As illogical as it may seem, it's not, as the actors have only been allowed to talk about their projects since the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike, which began a week before Barbie's wide release.
Obviously the most anticipated film of the year, Barbie was an instant hit that went on to become the highest grossing film of 2023, earning a whopping $1.44 billion at the box office. Its amusing take on many social issues and hilarity were undoubtedly the main reasons why Barbie proved so popular with diverse audiences around the world. In addition, Barbie's star-studded cast, including Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Helen Mirren and Will Ferrell, also contributed to the film's tremendous success. And apparently, it could have had even more star power, as Thimothée Chalamet was set to make a cameo appearance in the film.
What Would The Cameo Have Been?
Unfortunately, Chalamet's cameo never happened. What's even more upsetting is that it's unknown what the cameo would have been, as even the actor himself seems to know very little about it. Timothée has a vague idea of what he was supposed to do in Barbie.
'There was an idea for Saoirse Ronan and I do a cameo in it. I don't know what the cameo would've been. I think it would have been one of the rejected Kens or Barbies, not Allan, but something. Maybe there was a reject French one along the way. I don't know. I don't know what that would've been,' the actor shared in a recent interview.
Chalamet on the Barbie Set
Given this, it might seem that Thimothée Chalamet's Barbie cameo is just gossip. But according to the actor, he did visit Greta Gerwig on the set of the movie, where he saw the comedy's incredible behind-the-scenes work, which he admittedly loved.
'I did [get to see Greta Gerwig], because when I finished Wonka, the Barbie set had been built, so it was kind of going from, like, a fantastical London chocolate [factory to Barbieland]. The [Barbie] set is insane… insane,' Timothée added.
Essentially, the actor didn't say why his cameo was scrapped. But at least now we know it was a possibility. Perhaps Chalamet could make an appearance in a Ken movie if it were to be made...
