The character's awkward vibe was natural.

Summary

  • Virgin River is beloved for the wide variety of characters it follows.
  • While some of the show's characters are universally adored, others are hated by fans.
  • Ricky is the most annoying male character on VR.
  • The actor is admittedly just as awkward in real life as his character.

Debuting in 2019, Virgin River quickly gained the status of one of Netflix's most popular shows. Centered around the on-again, off-again romance between Melinda Monroe, a newcomer to the titular town, and Jack Sheridan, the owner of the local bar, the show has attracted hordes of fans over its five-year run. But you might be surprised to learn that the duo isn't the only reason for VR's popularity.

In addition to Mel and Jack, Virgin River follows a host of other characters whose stories are just as fascinating as those of the main characters. Take, for example, Hope McCrea's day-to-day life as the town's long-serving mayor – not only does Hope have to run the place, but she also has to deal with her own personal drama, consisting of a somewhat dysfunctional romance with Doc and a traumatic head injury she suffered in a car accident.

Not every character in Virgin River is as appealing as Hope, however. While Charmaine holds the title of most irritating woman on the show, she has a male counterpart who drives many viewers crazy with his immaturity and antics. Ricky is by far the most ridiculous male character in VR. And the reason is simple – the actor portraying him brought his own awkwardness to the set.

Grayson Gurnsey's Original Epic Fail

Portrayed by Grayson Gurnsey, Ricky has been a side character on Virgin River since its inception. He's caused a lot of chaos for the rest of the characters, and apparently the actor wreaked havoc on the show's set on his first day.

'One of my favorite scenes to film was, funny enough, the first scene I was in for the whole show. Do you remember when Mel first walks into the bar and Ricky sees her and then Jack tells him to get lost? Well, they don't show it but they gave me really hard blocking for that scene and I had to carry a tray of glasses and on the 3rd take I dropped almost every single one of them,' Grayson Gurnsey wrote on Reddit during his recent Ask Me Anything session with fans.

'But Martin [Henderson] and Alex [Breckenridge] are pros so they pretended that it didn't happen and finished the scene. They never gave me anything to carry for the rest of the day and I wanted to die from embarrassment. Haha, good times'.

Certainly, Ricky is written to unsettle us with his behavior. But given the actor's awkwardness, it is no surprise that his character came across as properly cringy.
