Let's be honest, we all want it to happen!

Summary

  • The Boys' bleak world is perhaps the most realistic depiction of a place with superhumans.
  • The audience expects the show to end soon and wants only one thing to happen.
  • Fans of the show are divided on what exactly should happen in the finale.

Since its premiere in 2019, The Boys has been one of the most popular shows on Prime Video. Centering on a group of corrupt superheroes who work for Vought, a global corporation that sells a narrative about them to the public, the show is devoid of any Marvel and DC romance as it documents the dark and gruesome reality of 'supes' abusing their inhuman powers.

Offering perhaps the most realistic portrayal of a world populated by superhumans, The Boys has been immensely popular with audiences, spanning three seasons and inspiring a spin-off, with the fourth installment set for release in 2024. Although it hasn't been announced that this will be the final season, many fans feel that the end is near. And apparently, there's only one thing viewers want to see in The Boys' finale.

The Downfall of Homelander

One of The Boys' central characters, the most beloved superhero in the show's world, and also the most powerful, this psychopath of a superhero has been hated by fans for his violence and arrogance since his release. Showing signs of a God complex, Homelander treats the world like his oyster, people like ants, and doesn't think twice about killing someone – sometimes just for fun.

Naturally, most viewers long to see the sadist get his comeuppance. However, fans seem to disagree on what that should be.

Homelander's Penalty

'I prefer this: Homelander is stripped down of his powers. He and Billy have the most unglamorous fight of the show. Bruised eyes and broken teeth. No finesse or awe moments. Like two drunk men in a bar,’ one Redditor suggested.

'HL is not prepared for a fair fight. He was still very powerful against The Boys in the S3 finale. He's not used to making an effort to win so he easily gets humbled. He realizes that he's "all bark no bite". Billy decides HL is too pitiful to kill. HL must now face what normal people of his age do – back pain, mid-life crisis and inferiority complex. The show is about supes taking advantage of their invulnerability to humans. So the ending should be about their vulnerability and humanization.'

Meanwhile, most fans anticipate a more definitive and less humane punishment for Homelander – the capital one.

'I want to see him die, but I also want to see him squirm. I want him to grapple with losing his power. I want to see him after he loses his image. I want him to try to come to terms with losing everything that he valued within himself, everything he thought made him special and I want him to fail,' another Reddit user contradicted.

'I want to see him suffer as he realizes that the public hates him, he has no powers, and that Vought just replaced him. Then I want to see him brutally beaten to death.'

Well, we are still on the fence here. But any comeuppance would be well deserved for Homelander, don't you think?
