There's a Way to Keep Young Sheldon on Air Beyond Season 7 Instead of Ending It
The fan-favorite show comes to an end… but it doesn't have to!
Young Sheldon first hit the screens in 2017 as a prequel to the wildly popular The Big Bang Theory. The spin-off and the parent sitcom overlapped for two years until 2019 when the final episode of TBBT Season 12 aired. Since then, Young Sheldon has been doing pretty well on its own and is currently counting six seasons.
But sadly, many fans believe that it has to end after the upcoming Season 7.
As a series focusing on TBBT's most prominent character, Sheldon Cooper, Young Sheldon largely follows (and expands on) the narrative canvas provided in the parent show. And we know from Sheldon's stories in TBBT that there are some dramatic events coming up that are likely to cause a rift in the Cooper household and destroy the overall feel and flow of the spin-off — namely, George Sr.'s death.
It may seem impossible to continue the show after one of its important characters passes away, but there are some fans who believe Young Sheldon can live on into Season 8.
In TBBT, we learn that Sheldon was 14 years old when his father died. In the current Season 6 of Young Sheldon, the teenage genius is 13, which means that George Sr. must die next year, that is, in the next season. The Cooper family will lose their patriarch, and the show itself will feel incomplete without one of its beloved characters. So, it is only natural to expect that Young Sheldon will come to a close with George Sr.'s death, but many fans just don't want to let it go, arguing that the series could simply carry on with Sheldon's and the other characters' lives.
Given the series' title Young Sheldon, we can expect the narrative to continue following the young physicist's life after his father's untimely death. Season 8 could show Sheldon's further scientific endeavors — he's supposed to go on to lecture students at a German institute, and Caltech and the doctoral degree await him as well.
Also, if the eighth season is ever produced, it could give us some glimpses into the other characters' lives, just as the show has done for the first six seasons when all characters were still together.
Speculation aside, we still have Season 6's grand finale ahead of us, and the whole Season 7 will surely be delightful to watch.
The next episode of Young Sheldon airs April 27 on CBS.
