The Weeknd Teases The Idol Season 2 Renewal, Fans Bracing For Another Bad Fanfic
The Idol is over, right? Right!?
If you thought we were done with The Idol and could happily forget about those weird five weeks of hate-watching, disputing, and searching for the meaning of it all, think again. The Weeknd's Instagram post celebrating The Idol finale, which aired on Max on July 2, suggests that the singer-turned-actor-writer hasn't played enough with being a filmmaker, and Season 2 isn't out of the question.
'The finale. Grateful to share this moment with you all as the season comes to an end,' The Weeknd captioned a gallery of images showing the making of the final episode. 'Continue to push the vision no matter how bumpy the journey.'
Those words, along with the 'Jocelyn Forever' the singer added at the end of the caption after tagging The Idol co-creator Sam Levinson and star Lily-Rose Depp, were taken by many viewers as a sign that Season 2 would happen no matter what.
Rumors of renewing the controversial series began circulating on social media before The Idol even premiered. While it is hard to find a positive review for the show, both HBO and the cast have previously teased that Season 2 is in talks.
'It is being misreported that a decision on a second season of The Idol has been determined. It has not, and we look forward to sharing the next episode with you Sunday night,' the official HBO Twitter account wrote back in June, refuting the rumors that the series had been canceled.
Well, whether Season 2 happens or not, the real question here is whether viewers are willing to give another few hours of their lives to the toxic couple of Depp's Jocelyn and The Weeknd's Tedros. Scrolling through the fan discussions shows that even those who watched all five episodes of The Idol will not be tuning in for the sequel.
'I watched the whole thing in the hope that maybe, just maybe the story was going somewhere interesting… and no way am I going to watch a Season 2. The finale really made sure of that,' a disappointed viewer wrote on Reddit.
Users say the Season 1 story is so bad that there's no way to make it compelling going further, even if you are a legend in the music industry. Instead of writing another script that is more reminiscent of bad fan fiction, The Weeknd should stick to what he does best — writing and performing songs.
'Boy, what do you mean not over? You're writing some fanfics? The show is done,' a viewer commented on Reddit to the agreement of thousands.
