The audience seems to have made a U-turn on their stance on the series.

Although The Idol concluded almost a week ago, it remains the talk of the town. Despite never truly resonating with the audience and consistently losing viewers, the new Max series was a hot topic on the internet.

Indeed, people have been ranting and raving about The Idol since its premiere on 4 June because it totally failed to live up to the expectations of The Weeknd's fans. Sexually explicit and gloomy, The Idol stirred so much controversy from the very start that many thought it was a major faux pas on Abel Tesfaye's part.

Just a couple of days ago, we wrote that despite The Idol's shortcomings, many viewers liked The Weeknd's acting and largely blamed the show's failure on poor writing and directing. Now, however, netizens seem to be reappraising that assessment.

More and more people are now suggesting that Tedros, the character the Weeknd portrays in the series, is the weakest link in the whole project, and that's crucial because he's a central character. The unquestionably gifted musician and four-time Grammy Award winner doesn't seem to be good at acting after all.

'He sounds confident when he's making music and is a talented singer. As an actor, he's not quite there yet and his lines do not feel authentic so it's cringe,' a Redditor pointed out.

Indeed, The Idol was quite impressive musically. The Weeknd assembled a group of extremely talented musicians and produced a really good original soundtrack for the series. That's his area of expertise, and he delivered.

However, playing a central character proved The Weeknd's undoing in The Idol. He failed to deliver a convincing performance and, as a result, didn't fully develop his character. That might explain why many viewers were left perplexed after the series' rather confusing finale – they simply didn't understand Tedros's development, which is partly The Weeknd's failing as an actor.

Reportedly, The Idol won't be Abel's final foray into acting. Currently, he's said to be working on an as-yet-unnamed film with Edward Shults. Let's hope the singer does better the second time around!
