The Weeknd Just Delivered One of 2025's Biggest Flops

After the disaster of The Idol, this was supposed to be a comeback. Instead, it's another box office bomb with The Weeknd's name on it.
The Weeknd's big Hollywood bet has crashed hard. Hurry Up Tomorrow, directed by Trey Edward Shults and starring The Weeknd and Jenna Ortega, has earned just $5 million worldwide against its $15 million budget. In less than a month, it's already headed to video-on-demand — a brutal fate for a movie hyped as a bold artistic statement.
The critical response? Even worse. Hurry Up Tomorrow holds a 17% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 29 on Metacritic, numbers usually reserved for legendary disasters. Some backlash comes from The Weeknd himself, still recovering from the implosion of HBO's The Idol.
But it's not just personal bias — viewers are calling the film "sloppy," "self-indulgent," and a "half-baked mess." One viral post didn't hold back, accusing The Weeknd of Hollywood grift: "You're not a visionary. Jenna Ortega should be ashamed."
Trey Edward Shults built a name with Krisha, known for its raw intensity, and Hurry Up Tomorrow looked, at least from the trailers, like another big swing. But ambition isn't always enough. Despite the pedigree, the film has landed with a thud.
Hurry Up Tomorrow hit VOD on June 6 — barely three weeks after its theatrical release.
