The Waterfront Just Blew Up on Netflix. So Where's Season 2?

The Waterfront premiered on June 19, and in less than a week, it sailed straight into Netflix's Top 10 — racking up 8.3 million views and 53.3 million hours watched in just three days.
As of now, it's still sitting at #2 in the U.S., which is no small feat for a gritty family drama about a collapsing North Carolina fishing empire.
So... is Season 2 happening?
Not yet. As of now, Netflix hasn't officially renewed The Waterfront, but they haven't canceled it either — which, in Netflix-speak, means "we're waiting to see if the numbers keep climbing."
The show was created by Kevin Williamson (yep, Scream, Dawson's Creek, The Following), and he's already thinking long-term. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Williamson said:
"I went in there pitching three [seasons] — that's [Netflix's] magic number… I could go five seasons if it's a success, but I'd be happy with three. Three would be a solid number."
He also added that, with this cast, they could easily go beyond three — or even four — if the show stays strong.
"This is a new landscape. Netflix is a new world to me… It's only eight episodes. Three seasons is one season of network television."
Translation: the story's ready to go, the cast is game, and the streamer just needs to greenlight it.
For now, it's a waiting game. But given the show's early numbers and how quickly it climbed the charts, The Waterfront has a solid shot at getting that renewal. And if Netflix likes those binge stats, don't be surprised if Season 2 gets announced soon.
