The Walking Dead Role You Forgot Terry Crews Took On After Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Terry Crews swapped laughs for post-apocalyptic thrills after the beloved series wrapped in 2021, stepping straight into the zombie-packed world of Tales of the Walking Dead the following year.
So, you know Terry Crews—big, hilarious energy, basically the heartbeat of 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' as Terry Jeffords. Once the credits rolled on B99 back in 2021, Crews didn’t just hit the gym and cash those yogurt ads. Nope, the man wandered right into the undead wasteland of AMC’s 'Tales of the Walking Dead'. The weird part? A ton of people don’t realize he was actually in it. Let’s fix that.
When Terry Met Zombies: A Quick Look at Tales of the Walking Dead
'Tales of the Walking Dead' is one of those spin-offs that’s more like a box of random apocalypse stories than a typical rambling zombie drama. Each episode is a one-shot deal—different setting, different vibe, new characters, and, importantly for Terry Crews fans, no homework required.
- Show: Tales of the Walking Dead
- Created by: Channing Powell
- Network: AMC
- Genre: Post-apocalyptic horror, anthology drama
- Original Run: August 14, 2022 – September 18, 2022
- Seasons: 1 (6 episodes total)
- Setting: The same zombie-infested United States as the main series, but every episode does its own thing
Terry Crews Plays Joe: Preppers, Motorcycles, and Dobermans—Not Kidding
Terry Crews shows up right out of the gate, starring in the very first episode called 'Evie/Joe.' Here’s the deal: Joe is a doomsday prepper living in a bunker with his doberman Gilligan (yes, the dog gets a name). The zombie apocalypse has basically confirmed every wild theory he ever had about the end of times, so Joe is—shocker—pretty good at being alone.
When Gilligan dies, Joe goes a bit off the rails. He decides to take a 700-mile motorcycle ride to meet up with Sandra, a fellow prepper pal he only knew online but always low-key wished he’d met in person. Of course, nothing’s ever simple in zombie world.
Along the way, he crosses paths with Evie (Olivia Munn, yes that Olivia Munn), who might be the most chipper survivor in TV apocalypse history. She literally kidnaps Joe at gunpoint—her mission: go find her missing husband. Joe is forced into this unlikely road trip with Evie, and what follows is survival skills, martial arts, bike theft, and, ultimately, this odd couple kind of works.
Here’s the plot-twisty part: Sandra, the woman Joe risked everything to find, ends up being not so friendly—she drugs him. Evie, who Joe had ditched after the stolen motorcycle fiasco, comes back, saves the day, and Joe ends up killing Sandra in self-defense. By the time the credits roll, Joe and Evie (plus her own dog, Skipper) are heading off together on foot, hunting hope, because, sure, that’s what zombie shows do.
Terry Crews: Hardcore Walking Dead Fan, Ready for Round Two
Here’s where things get meta. Turns out Terry Crews is a total Walking Dead fanatic—like, watched-every-episode-since-2010-level. When he landed the gig, he was actually pumped that his character didn’t eat it at the end. His own reaction, in his words, makes it clear:
'Believe me, when I read it and I was like, I don't die. I said, Oh my God. I'm so in love with this character. I love who he is and I would just love to see him somehow mixed up in the actual flagship world of The Walking Dead.'
Crews has not been shy—he's flat out said he wants Joe to maybe be related to Tyrese in the canon (that's Chad Coleman’s character from the OG series), or somehow go on a supply run with Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus). He’s ready to return: 'If they let me back in, I’d be welcoming.' As far as I'm concerned, if Terry Crews is begging to get dropped into a regular 'Walking Dead' bloodbath, AMC should probably make it happen.
And for the record, 'The Walking Dead' proper is still on Netflix, 'Tales of the Walking Dead' is sitting on Prime Video, and 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' streams on Peacock—all in the U.S. So if you want to see Terry Crews go from yogurt spokesman to doomsday hero, it’s all just a click away.
