The Wait Just Got Longer: M. Night Shyamalan’s Remain Delayed to 2027
Shyamalan trades jack-o’-lanterns for roses as Remain shifts from a planned Halloween 2026 bow to a Valentine’s Day 2027 release.
M. Night Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks made one of those unexpected creative pairings that sounds like a dare: a supernatural romantic thriller called 'Remain.' Now the movie half of that two-pronged plan is shifting dates — out of spooky season and into date-night season.
The delay
Shyamalan posted that Warner Bros. Pictures has bumped 'Remain' off its original October 23, 2026 slot. New plan: February 5, 2027. From Halloween corridor to Valentine vibes. Honestly, for a love-and-ghosts story, that pivot makes sense.
What this thing is
Shyamalan and Sparks built the concept together. Shyamalan wrote the screenplay for the film. Sparks turned the idea into a novel. Both versions use the same central premise and characters, each tuned for their medium. The novel is already on shelves if you want a head start.
The story
In Sparks' book, New York architect Tate Donovan heads to Cape Cod to design his best friend's summer place and quietly reboot his life. He has just been released from an upscale psychiatric facility after a battle with acute depression, still raw from losing his sister, Sylvia. Before she died, Sylvia told him she could see spirits tangled up with the living — something she said runs in their family. Tate is a rationalist, not a believer.
Once he checks into a historic bed-and-breakfast on the Cape, he meets Wren — magnetic, grounded, and exactly the person to upend his carefully managed worldview. Their connection hits fast and hard. But Wren's small-town orbit hides some uglier currents — jealousy, greed, and long-buried grudges that start pressing in on them. To protect her, Tate has to dig into Wren's past before time runs out, and along the way he starts questioning the stories we tell ourselves and even the rules we think govern reality. It's a love story that leans into the unsettling: big feelings, bigger stakes, and the suggestion that love might push past grief — and maybe past life and death.

Where this lands
October 2026 would have leaned into the thriller angle; February 2027 highlights the romance. Either way, 'Remain' is positioned as a genre two-hander. Until then, the book is the appetizer and the movie is the main course — just served a little later.
