Learning another language is an ordeal, and speaking one fluently is a superpower. That's why people get even more obsessed with those celebs who can show off their impressive command of a foreign tongue.
Just recently, Hannah Waddingham, the star of the Apple TV+ comedy Ted Lasso, wowed the audience with her fluent French at Eurovision 2023. And just a month before that, Ben Affleck also surprised his fans with his excellent knowledge of Spanish!
During the promo tour for his new film Air, telling the story of Michael Jordan's legendary sneaker brand, the actor gave an interview to the Spanish radio outlet, La Cadena SER. In immaculate Spanish, Affleck talked about the importance of the picture and how the filming process went.
Naturally, fans of the actor were shocked and wanted to know how he managed to learn the language so well.
As it turns out, Ben Affleck lived in a Spanish-speaking country for a long time when he was a teenager. At 13, the young actor was starring in a show that had one of its seasons filmed in Mexico, so he had to spend a whole year in the country, fully immersed in the local culture and learning the Spanish language naturally, as any child would.
In addition to that, Afflect has dated several Spanish-speaking celebrities over the years, including charming Ana de Armas and Jennifer Lopez, who is now the actor's wife. Naturally, these relationships must have had a positive effect on Affleck's proficiency in the language.
Curiously, the actor himself says that it was his daughter and her Spanish homework that pushed him to improve his own command of the language.
'I don't mind that I can't do your math homework, but you can't be better at Spanish than me,' Ben Afflect cited his words to his daughter on The Kelly Clarkson Show.
Whatever the actor's motivation behind his language learning is, he has achieved mastery of Spanish, and many fans, especially those of the Latin descent, find this truly admiring.
