The final season of the hit CBS comedy is not particularly popular with fans.

Summary

  • Although Young Sheldon is generally more popular than TBBT, many fans are disappointed with Season 7.
  • The prequel has changed too much since the beginning.
  • Episode 9 shows what's wrong with Season 7.

With only four episodes left in Young Sheldon's seventh season, the much-loved CBS comedy is as close to its conclusion as ever. Since premiering in 2017, the TBBT prequel has been one of the most popular shows on television – in fact, it's fair to say that YS is even more popular with viewers than its parent sitcom. And there are many reasons why.

Following TBBT's fan-favorite character, Dr. Sheldon Cooper, through his childhood with his family in East Texas, Young Sheldon is very different from The Big Bang Theory. The spin-off isn't just the next sitcom, it's a nuanced story full of complicated, multifaceted characters who have both appealing and off-putting sides. This is why viewers enjoy the prequel so much more. But it seems that Season 7 hasn't been very popular with the audience.

The Plot

Although Young Sheldon is named after Shelly and is meant to revolve around him, he quickly proved not to be the most popular character on the show. The boy's family, on the other hand, has been a favorite of viewers since the spin-off began. Meemaw's sense of humor, George's easygoing attitude, Mary's kindness, Missy's wit, and Georgie's goofiness make them very relatable to viewers. Meanwhile, the older Sheldon gets, the more annoying he becomes to other people.

With that in mind, it's no surprise that Young Sheldon has gradually shifted from a show about the boy genius to a show about the Coopers. But it seems that Season 7 may have taken this trend too far, with the seventh installment focusing more on Georgie and Mandy's arc than on the title character.

Once in a Blue Moon

It would be an exaggeration to say that Season 7 ignores Sheldon altogether - after all, it begins with the boy's trip to Germany - but YS' new installment doesn't pay nearly enough attention to the character. Instead, Georgie and Mandy seem to have taken center stage as the show explores the effects of parenthood and marriage on their relationship.

No wonder that Episode 9, which focused on Shelly after his research paper was published in an international science magazine, has a higher IMDb score than any of the previous episodes of this season.

'A Fancy Article and a Scholarship for a Baby' proved that Young Sheldon fans are there for Sheldon, and it's his storyline that makes the show popular in the first place. There will be a separate show about Georgie and Mandy, so there's no need to turn the remnants of YS into it. Hopefully, the rest of Season 7 will focus more on Sheldon. Episodes 11 and 12 will premiere on May 9.

Does Young Sheldon stray too far from the arc of the main character?
