The Real Reason Why Virgin River's Charmaine Is So Insufferable
The actress's performance makes her character so credibly irritating.
Summary
- Charmaine is undoubtedly the most annoying character on Virgin River.
- There are several reasons why the audience can't stand her.
- Charmaine owes her impact to the talent of the actress portraying her.
It has been said over and over again. Charmaine is the most annoying person on Virgin River. While the show follows a lot of different characters, many of whom are irritating to say the least (Hope McCrea, Preacher, Kaia, Lizzie, Ricky, Dr. Cameron, and even VR's protagonist Mel Monroe), no one drives the audience crazy like Charmaine. And there are a number of reasons for this.
First and foremost, she doesn't seem to have a storyline separate from Mel and Jack, where she acts as a third wheel. As a result, Charmaine doesn't seem to have any redeeming qualities because the audience doesn't see her from a different perspective than the rest of Virgin River's annoying characters. Charmaine's never-ending scheming and manipulation doesn't do her any favors either, as she comes across as villainous. But it is only because of the actress' performance that the character evokes such a strong visceral reaction in the audience.
Brilliant Acting – Terrible Character
Since her debut in the very first episode of Virgin River, Charmaine has been one of the show's central characters, standing in the way of Mel and Jack's happiness. Portrayed by Lauren Hammersley, she has been a nasty thorn in the side of the main duo throughout the show's five-season run, drawing the ire of the audience with every appearance on screen.
Arguably, such a powerful performance has a lot to do with the actress' talent, as she's managed to portray an incredibly obnoxious woman that viewers universally hate. In other words, if it weren't for Lauren Hammersley's acting, Charmaine wouldn't be so annoying.
Lauren Hammersley's other Performances
Throughout her career, the Charmaine actress has appeared in some notable projects. Aside from Virgin River, Lauren Hammersley is currently starring in Sullivan's Crossing, which is also based on a series of novels by Robyn Carr. The actress also starred in Hallmark's recent holiday premiere, Christmas Island.
Prior to Virgin River, Hammersley starred in the popular Canadian sitcom Mr. D. She also had a recurring role in the sci-fi drama Orphan Black. The actress also made episodic appearances in John Doe, Single White Spenny and Saving Hope.
As for her future on Virgin River, it seems skewed, as now that Charmaine has given birth to her twins, which have been confirmed not to be Jack's, she has no influence over Mel and Jack and makes little sense story-wise. For this reason, we'll have to wait and see what happens to Hammersley's character in Season 6 of the Netflix show.
