Scary Movie 6 just moved up — and it’s bringing the Wayans family back for the first time since 2001. Marlon Wayans reveals why he returned for the rebooquel.

Scary Movie 6 just moved up a week on the calendar, and yes, the Wayans are actually back in the franchise for the first time since 2001. Marlon Wayans, the youngest of the crew, explained why it finally happened and what this new chapter is supposed to be.

The Wayans return, finally

Scary Movie 6 will be the first installment with the Wayans family involved since Scary Movie 2 in 2001. After decades away, Marlon says the stars lined up to make a reunion make sense.

Why they came back

  • The old power structure that pushed them out is gone, clearing the way to re-engage.
  • Their father, Howell Stouten Wayans, wanted to see his sons working together again.
  • Marlon credits faith for the final nudge, saying the timing felt right.

The split, then the reunion

The family stepped off the franchise back in 2001, before a third movie was even confirmed. The break came after disagreements with executive producer Bob Weinstein, who also founded Dimension Films. Two and a half decades later, here we are.

What this movie is (and is not)

'I got me and my brothers together to come back to a franchise that we were removed from. I think the assignment is to bring back the cast, bring back me and my brothers working together, and to bring back big-a-- laughs. The world needs a big-a-- laugh.'

Marlon is calling Scary Movie 6 a 'rebooquel' instead of a straight reboot. Translation: this is designed to talk to the original fans and the new crowd at the same time.

'This movie is a rebooquel. It is multi-generational. It is a conversation comedically that is needed, that needs to be had from our generation down to Gen Alpha. And it is all inclusive.'

He also teased a looser, improv-friendly set, with the cast encouraged to play and layer in a pile of topical references. If they really let everyone swing, expect the movie to feel more chaotic in the way these films used to.

The date to circle

Scary Movie 6 now opens June 5, 2026, a week earlier than previously announced (it was set for June 12). After 25 years away, the Wayans are promising a big, loud return. Frankly, that sounds like the correct lane for this series.
