The writers have betrayed the beloved character.

Summary

  • Izzy Hands’s death caused a total shock among fans of the show.
  • The character was killed off just an episode after his heartwarming coming out.
  • Fans are saying that the show won’t be the same without Izzy.

Without a doubt, Max's Our Flag Means Death is one of the most popular comedy shows on air, as the second outing in the story of the LGBTQ+ pirates proved to be even more popular than the original first season. Fans love the chemistry between all the cast members, and the central romance between Taika Waititi's Blackbeard and Rhys Dharby's Stede Bonnet is already being called one of the most iconic in recent television history.

That said, the show still has a number of problems, and the biggest of them all occurred in the Season 2 finale, when Con O'Neill's Izzy Hands was killed off, despite being one of OFMD's most beloved supporting characters.

This death ruined fans

While killing off popular characters is not always a bad thing, as it can be a great way for the writers to evolve the show, the same cannot be said for Izzy's untimely death, as it simply derailed the entire narrative and made no sense from any point of view.

The thing is, fans feel that Izzy was betrayed by the writers because his journey of self-acceptance was cut short. Even though it was obvious from Season 1 that Izzy was a gay man, he felt very much like a closeted gay man as he kept his feelings to himself and only trusted Blackbeard.

Unfair ending to the story

However, in episode 7 of season 2, Izzy finally appeared in a drag show, and seeing him in a dress and happy was one of the best moments OMFD ever gave fans. People were sure that Izzy had finally conquered his demons and were eager to see where his journey would take him next.

So, the fact that he was killed off in the very next episode was truly devastating to fans, as they began to argue that the writers made it look like his coming out was the end of his journey.

Unfortunately, Izzy's death can't be undone (unless some magic is involved), and it looks like we'll have to watch the future season of Our Flag Means Death without our favorite pirate.

Do you think Izzy's death ruined the show?
