Decades after Jerry Maguire, Jonathan Lipnicki still turns to Tom Cruise for game-changing career advice, praising his former costar’s relentless drive, generosity, and unwavering mentorship.

Jonathan Lipnicki grew up on camera, but when he needs a reality check about the industry, he still turns to the guy who shouted 'Show me the money.' In a new interview, the Jerry Maguire alum laid out how Tom Cruise has quietly stayed in his corner for years — from last-minute advice to helping him chase a role in Top Gun: Maverick.

Still calling Cruise for career advice

Lipnicki was five when he co-starred with Cruise in Cameron Crowe's Jerry Maguire, and he says the connection stuck. On the Pod Meets World podcast, he described what it is about Cruise that landed so hard with him as a kid and still does now:

"It's this energy I've never felt before, it's his presence, it's his drive and his kindness and understanding."

He has not spoken with Cruise recently, but says that when he reaches out, Cruise gets back to him quickly. In his twenties, Lipnicki even went to Cruise's house for a sit-down where the star offered nuts-and-bolts guidance — work hard, be kind, show up early, stay late. Lipnicki says he has always looked up to Cruise and calls him incredible to him personally.

The Top Gun: Maverick near-miss

When Top Gun: Maverick was gearing up, Lipnicki took a swing. He emailed the Mission: Impossible lead directly to ask for a shot at an audition, and Cruise opened the door.

"I emailed him and said, 'Hey I don't know if you think I'm right for this, but if you think I'm right I'd love to audition for it' ... he got me an audition."

Lipnicki read for multiple roles. He did not land one. He chalks it up to not being the right fit this time, but he is clearly grateful for the chance — just like he is for the opportunity Cruise helped give him back on Jerry Maguire.

Why Cruise stands apart

Asked what makes Cruise different, Lipnicki points straight at the grind. He says Cruise is laser-focused on delivering the best version of a movie, respects the audience enough to never underestimate them, and will literally put himself on the line to make sure they get what they came for.

None of this exactly shatters the Tom Cruise legend — early, prepared, polite, and not afraid to dangle off a cliff if it makes the scene sing — but it is fun to hear it confirmed by the kid who handed him the human head weighs eight pounds line.
