South Park has company: a rival just pulled even, and the next season could decide who wears TV’s longevity crown.

The Outer Worlds 2 reviews have started to land, and Obsidian just pulled off a very familiar trick: it scored an 85 on Metacritic, basically matching the original. Not a shock, but still impressive.

Where the score lands

That 85 puts The Outer Worlds 2 shoulder to shoulder with the first game and South Park: The Stick of Truth, a tick above Fallout: New Vegas at 84, and comfortably ahead of this year’s Avowed at 80. In the studio’s long history, that makes it tied for the fifth highest-rated Obsidian game overall.

  • Above it: Pentiment (90 on Nintendo Switch 2 — yes, that platform tag is what the listing says), Pillars of Eternity (89 on PC), Pillars of Eternity again (88 on PC), and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 - The Sith Lords (86 on Xbox).

Obsidian has been everywhere this year

They have been busy. Avowed hit back in February. Grounded 2 popped up out of nowhere over the summer and launched almost immediately after it was announced. And now they’re closing the year with The Outer Worlds 2, which arrives next week on October 29.

Critics are into it

GamesRadar+ handed the sequel 4.5 out of 5. Senior staff writer Heather Wald had a lot of praise for the size, flexibility, and writing, and summed it up like this:

'The Outer Worlds 2 is bigger and better than the first game in every respect, with deep, rich role-playing and plenty of freedom to tailor your experience. Every world feels curated, and exploration is always purposeful and rewarding. Topped off with a vast range of weapons, brilliant writing, and a story and character that’s yours to shape, this is Obsidian doing what it does best to deliver an engrossing RPG you’ll want to replay again and again.'

A sharp edge to your choices

One spicy design note: if you blunder hard enough, your companions can actually turn on you and fight you 'to the death'. That’s intentional — Obsidian wanted the crew to feel 'like they’re their own people', not just quest dispensers who nod along no matter what you do.

The date

The Outer Worlds 2 launches October 29. If you’ve been waiting to see where the sequel lands, consider the landing stuck — right in Obsidian’s comfort zone.
