Got a pan wearing a stubborn black coat that laughs at your scrub brush? Save your wrists and skip the heavy-duty chemicals. Here is the quick kitchen-cupboard fix I use, and it takes about 15 minutes of mostly waiting around.
What you need
Grab salt (1-2 tbsp), baking soda (1-2 tbsp), a squeeze of dish soap, 9% white vinegar, paper towels or napkins, and rubber gloves. That is it.
Do it like this
- Pull on the gloves and lightly wet the pan with water.
- Sprinkle salt and baking soda over the grimy zones.
- Add a small amount of dish soap and spread it around.
- Lay damp paper towels over the surface to cover it.
- Pour 9% vinegar straight over the towels until they are well soaked. Leave it for 10-15 minutes.
- Listen for fizzing and watch the foam do its thing — that is the gunk letting go.
- Peel off the towels and wash the pan with a soft sponge. Rinse well.
The payoff
The black film lifts with minimal effort, the pan looks clean again, there is no chemical cloud hanging over the sink, and you did not add any scratches.
What this works on
Great for cast iron, stainless steel, and enamel-coated pans. Skip this on nonstick/teflon — use mustard powder or a gentle simmer with baking soda instead.
