Universal Pictures has locked a release date for The Mummy 4, and social media erupted as fans rallied behind one must-return star.

The sands are shifting again. Universal is officially cracking open the tomb for The Mummy 4, and yes, the right people have their whips and library ladders ready.

The date, the duo, the vibe

The studio planted a big flag on May 19, 2028 for a wide theatrical release. Brendan Fraser is back as Rick O'Connell. Rachel Weisz is back as Evelyn O'Connell, her first time returning to the series since 2001's The Mummy Returns. That alone will make a lot of folks feel like the late-90s just kicked down the door with a shotgun and a quip.

Radio Silence's Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are directing, aiming for that slippery blend of horror and comedy that made the original run sing. Story details are locked up tighter than Hamunaptra at sunrise.

Fans immediately lost it (in a good way)

"LETS GOOOOOOO"
"The Mummy with the OG cast... We are so back"

That was the general mood across timelines within minutes. Can you blame them?

The Imhotep question

Alongside the cheers, a very specific refrain took over: bring back Arnold Vosloo. The franchise's original big bad, the cursed priest Imhotep, is basically the third rail of this series. For a lot of fans, the alchemy here only fully clicks if Rick squares up against that sandstorm face again.

"What about Imhotep? Will be back Arnold Vosloo? That's the point."

Hard to argue with that. The Rick vs. Imhotep dynamic is the backbone of the whole thing, and people know it.

Who is steering the sarcophagus

  • Release date: May 19, 2028 (wide theatrical)
  • Cast: Brendan Fraser (Rick O'Connell), Rachel Weisz (Evelyn O'Connell) — Weisz's first return since 2001
  • Directors: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett
  • Tone: fresh horror-comedy energy; plot under wraps
  • Producers: Sean Daniel returns, joined by William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein

Bottom line: the core team is in place, the date is set, and the fan wishlist is loud and crystal clear. If Imhotep rises too, this could be the kind of crowd-pleasing resurrection studios dream about. If not... well, the Book of the Dead is still sitting right there.
