The Most On-Point SNL Sketch That Even SAG-AFTRA President Approves Of
At least, she expressed gratitude on her social media.
Summary
- Unlike the writers guild, SAG-AFTRA is still on strike.
- Many people were disappointed with the union's Halloween costume policy.
- SNL made fun of the guild's costume requirements.
- Fran Drescher seems to have taken it well.
While the WGA strike has been over for quite some time, with writers scribing new seasons of our beloved shows such as Virgin River and Chicago Fire, the actors guild is still negotiating a deal with the producers alliance. As a result, actors are out of work. Not only aren't they filming, they cannot promote their projects either. As we saw a couple of weeks ago, anything could be considered promotion – even a Halloween costume.
Not long ago, the SAG-AFTRA union made headlines when it issued a statement prohibiting its members from wearing costumes of characters from movies and TV shows that the guild was striking. Many people found the requirement ridiculous, and many guild members even poked fun at it. Ryan Reynolds, for example, joked that he couldn't wait until Halloween to call his kids a bunch of scabs for wearing costumes of the striking studios' characters.
In that light, it's not surprising that SNL made use (and fun) of the news in their latest episode. What's more, the iconic sketch comedy show also poked fun at current SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher, who doesn't seem to mind the skit. In fact, the former Nanny actress has shown her approval of the sketch since its release.
Trick-or-Treat with Fran Drescher
In the October 29 episode, SNL presented a sketch featuring a group of kids trick-or-treating in Halloween costumes. As they are about to receive candy from Nate Bargatze and Ego Nwodim's characters, Sarah Sherman, dressed as Fran Drescher, appears out of the blue and tells the children not to make 'a terrible mistake.'
She goes on to explain that wearing a costume of a character from a studio that the Guild is striking is equivalent to promoting the studio's content, 'which makes all of these children a bunch of adorable scabs.' Then, after ridiculing the SAG-AFTRA Halloween policy, SNL pokes fun at Fran Drescher herself as Sarah Sherman announces that many people have called her exhausting. And arguably the skit's funniest joke follows.
'This year, you can't be Yoda, but you can be Hoda [Kotb],' SNL's Drescher says.
'The wig is fake but the wine is real!' screams the little girl dressed as the famous NBC presenter.
Fran Drescher's Reaction
Obviously, that SNL sketch was intended to ridicule SAG-AFTRA for that act of overstepping. Yet, Fran Drescher seems to have liked it. On her Instagram page, the guild's president thanked the skit show for their support of the strike and voiced her appreciation of that sketch's timing.
'Gr8 timing and strike supportive. Ty SNL,' Drescher wrote.
Certainly, it's admirable that the SAG-AFTRA president can take a joke. But it seems that the skit was intended to show how overbearing the union can be – especially when it comes to children.
This Saturday, SNL goes on hiatus and will return on November 11.
