The Most Awkward SNL Duo Ever: What's Ayo Edebiri and Jennifer Lopez's Feud About?
There is no more beef between them, but…
Summary
- The eleventh episode of SNL's forty-ninth season unsettled viewers with its awkward pairing.
- Ayo Edebiri appeared in a sketch in which she referred to and apologized for her misdeeds to J Lo.
- The actress criticized the singer for her 'sham' career years ago.
Since its inception, Saturday Night Live has been known and loved for its brutally blunt and relevant humor. In a recent episode that aired on February 3, the sketch show tackled many pressing issues, from the current political scene in the U.S. to broader cultural trends like hate speech on the Internet.
And the circumstances couldn't have been better for a skit about the latter, as the episode's star, Ayo Edebiri, was guilty of smearing other people online herself.
What's even more amusing is that one of Edebiri's victims was Jennifer Lopez, who ironically was the musical guest on SNL episode 11 season 49 alongside Ayo. And even though the two stars seemed fine next to each other, it was extremely awkward to watch, to say the least.
An Apologetic Skit
During the episode, Ayo Edebiri took part in many hilarious sketches, but 'Why'd You Say It' was arguably the most important, as it saw the actress admit her fault in smearing J Lo.
In the sketch, Kenan Thompson traditionally portrayed the host of the titular game show, where contestants were forced to face their mean comments and posts online and answer why they wrote those horrible things.
Ayo's character admitted her mistake and apologized for her words, but it was done in a way that conveyed the actress' own apology, which many people thought was directed at Jennifer Lopez.
'Okay. We get it. It's wrong to leave mean comments, or post comments just for clout, or run your mouth on a podcast, and you don't consider the impact because you're twenty-four and stupid. But I think I speak for everyone when I say from now on, we're going to be a lot more thoughtful about what we post online,' Edebiri's character said.
Ayo's Mean Comments About J Lo
In 2020, the The Bear and Abbott Elementary actress appeared on an episode of the Scam Goddess podcast hosted by Laci Mosley. When the host accused Jennifer Lopez of being a scam singer, Ayo Edebiri didn't hesitate to back her up.
'Well, that's the thing – she thinks she's on multiple tracks, but it's not her. I think she thinks that she's still good, even though she's not singing for most of these songs,' Ayo said back then. 'A lot of the write-ups of the songs will be like, "J.Lo didn't have time to make it to the studio." Like, "J.Lo was busy." Doing what? Not singing, obviously.'
At the time, there was no news of Jennifer Lopez responding to the comments, but the two stars didn't seem tense on the recent SNL episode and even expressed their mutual love for each other's work. So there was no beef between the two, but the pairing was still very awkward to watch...
