The two seasons made viewers yearn for love in two different ways.

Summary

  • Bridgerton has been one of the most popular shows on Netflix since its launch in 2020.
  • The show's explicit set scenes attracted many viewers during its initial run.
  • Season 2 was much more subtle in that regard, but it still managed to excite audiences.

As soon as it debuted in 2020, Bridgerton became one of Netflix's flagship shows, with hordes of fans from all over the world. Set in Regency London, the show immediately won over audiences with its captivating stories of the titular family members and their exciting romances, presented in a very modern way. Needless to say, the combination of historical setting and contemporary storytelling ensured the show's continued success.

Although Bridgerton has only lasted two seasons so far, with the third installment premiering in May, it remains one of the most popular shows on Netflix. So much so that the romantic drama has inspired an equally popular spin-off, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.

However, many people feel that the spin-off is very different from the main show. The two seasons of Bridgerton are also very dissimilar. And what's fascinating is that the difference lies in the show's most popular feature - its approach to portraying romance.

Bridgerton's Key Forte

Arguably, one of the main reasons Bridgerton made such a splash upon its premiere is the show's uninhibited depiction of sex scenes. In fact, the show's steamy scenes were what drew most viewers to it. While there was nothing new about showing sex on television, it was exotic to see such daring acts in a historical setting, with characters dressed in corset dresses and frock coats.

In this respect, Season 1 was a prime example of sexual explicitness. The season, which centered on the love story of Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page), captivated many viewers with its steamy scenes as the characters explored their passion for each other. Given the success of the first installment, it would seem reasonable to keep this crowd-pleasing feature in the second season, but that is exactly what changed.

Different Kind of Sexy

Season 2, which told the story of Anthony Bridgerton and Kate Sharma's complicated romance, didn't feature many sex scenes. On the contrary, the story focused largely on the tension between the characters that resulted from their lack of sexual release. And while this may seem like a major departure from Bridgerton's best feature, it proved beneficial to the show.

The subtlety and nuance that came with the move away from explicitness intrigued the audience. Furthermore, the unresolved desire between the two characters made their story even sexier. It remains to be seen how hot Season 3 will be when it premieres on May 16.
