Fans are split on whether Xander was telling the truth.

Sam Levinson's The Idol has already become one of the most talked-about television shows of the year, all thanks to its incredible amount of nudity and The Weeknd's questionable performance as sleazy cult leader Tedros.

While many in the fandom have accused Levinson and The Weeknd of using nudity as the sole driving force for the narrative, it cannot be denied that Lily-Rose Depp is simply majestic as rising pop star Jocelyn, who may not be the victim everyone thought she was, as the recently released episode 4 revealed.

The new episode features a scene in which Tedros is torturing Xander, Jocelyn's creative director, who knows a lot about her complicated past. In the shocking episode, Tedros uses his shock collar to find out the truth about why Xander gave up his singing career and became second fiddle to Jocelyn, and the things he reveals completely change the way viewers perceive Jocelyn.

Under torture, Xander tells Tedros that Jocelyn is actually far worse than her abusive mother and warns his tormentor that she's probably using him the same way she has used everyone else in her life. And even though Xander changes his tune after Jocelyn demands that Tedros carry on with the torture, saying that he made things up about her to stop his suffering, we can tell that he was actually telling the truth the first time.

With that in mind, it looks like Jocelyn is the real villain in The Idol, pretending to be under Tedros's spell to achieve her own ends.

'Yes, that definitely is foreshadowing Jocelyn being way worse of a person than what's been shown (even though I think she's still a bad person in general, based on her total lack of concern for Leia). And it's clear Tedros believed what Xander was initially saying by the look on his face,' a fan said.

So it seems like Levinson is preparing to change the dynamic in the upcoming series finale, making Jocelyn the real abuser while painting Tedros as a naive sadist who fell right into the pop star's trap.

The Idol Episode 5 will arrive on HBO on 2 July 2023.
