At least Da'Vine Joy Randolph sounds sure of it.

The Idol has been getting hammered by critics and viewers alike for nearly five weeks now. Yet, by riding the hate wagon, the series has managed to become something of a pop culture phenomenon, drawing viewership ratings that have surpassed some of HBO's hit shows. Naturally, this divisive situation begs the question of whether the much-discussed project will get a second season.

Initially, the rumor mill had it that The Idol Season 1 had been shortened from six episodes to five due to the backlash surrounding it, and that a continuation was out of the question — but HBO pushed back in a tweet.

'It is being misreported that a decision on a second season of The Idol has been determined. It has not, and we look forward to sharing the next episode with you Sunday night,' the network wrote.

And now Da'Vine Joy Randolph, who plays fan-favorite character Destiny, the protagonist's trusted manager, confirms that HBO hasn't closed the door on The Idol Season 2. Far from it, in fact.

'It is definitely open where there could be a Season 2,' The Idol star told Variety. 'I think that everyone's intention is to have a second season. This was never intended to be a limited series. HBO has been very happy with it — so much so that there were rumors that we were canceled, and then HBO went on Twitter, which I think they rarely do. Nothing is official, but HBO is quite happy.'

Randolph added that the series finale, which airs Sunday, July 2, could serve as a perfect bridge to next season.

'There will be a turning the table [and] a really exciting setup of entering into Season 2,' the actress shared. 'I think a lot of Season 1 was to set up the world that not many people know because it's very complicated.'

Just like opinions on the show, reactions to Randolph's revelation have been mixed. While many viewers would prefer to never see or hear anything related to The Idol again, lots of fans are actually excited and want to see more of the troubled characters created by Sam Levinson and The Weeknd's imagination.

Looks like before making an official decision, HBO wants to see how The Idol finale does, ratings-wise.
