The K-pop star is the silver lining of this cloud of a show.

HBO's new show, The Idol, released just a few days ago, has been the talk of the town. Created by The Weeknd, it stars Lily-Rose Depp as the main character, Jocelyn, a budding artist who will do anything to make a name for herself in the entertainment industry.

The Idol paints a dark and exaggerated picture of show business. So far, only one episode has aired, but it has already caused some controversy, despite failing to make an impression on either viewers or critics. Specifically, one particular moment from the first episode seems to have caught the audience's attention the most.

The Blackpink star Jennie Kim's dance sequence in the first episode is all everyone is talking about. In the show, the K-pop singer plays Anys, Jocelyn's backup dancer. There's a scene where Jocelyn is seen taking a break on a lawn while Anys steals the spotlight with her dancing skills.

Interestingly, this dance sequence takes place in the background while the main characters are talking. Yet, the background dance turned out to be the first episode's highlight and grabbed the bulk of viewers' attention.

'Jennie's only scene will have more viewers than the whole series,' a YouTuber quipped.

Some of Jennie's fans are unhappy with her acting debut on what they consider a subpar show. They say it's a disgrace she's wasting her talent on The Idol.

HBO has a reputation for producing popular hit shows like Sex and the City and Game of Thrones, which have even spawned spinoffs because of their immense popularity. The Idol is off to a shaky start, but who knows, it might improve over time. We haven't seen much of The Weeknd yet, whose character is said to be vital to the story.

The second episode of The Idol is set to air on Max on 11 June (HBO Max has been rebranded as just Max).
